INFORMATION ON HUMIDOR AND CIGAR CARE
Here you can find information about the care of your humidor as well as frequently asked questions about cigars and cigar accessories. If you do not see the information you require please contact us.
Why do I need a humidor?
You need a humidor to provide the best possible environment for storing and preserving your cigars.
What is a humidor?
A humidor is typically a box, room or cabinet that has been specifically designed and constructed to store and preserve your cigars at optimum humidity and temperature levels.
What is a humidifier?
A humidifier is a device or piece of equipment designed to increase, maintain or regulate humidity (moisture) in your humidor.
What is a hygrometer?
A hygrometer is a device which is designed to measure and provide an accurate reading of relative humidity (moisture) in a specific environment such as your humidor. As cigars need to be stored at an optimum humidity level, a hygrometer is essential to accurately measure the humidity levels of your humidor.
Do you need to separate cigars in a humidor?
This really depends on the type of cigars you keep and what type of humidor you have. Ideally, different types of cigar should be kept separate to avoid the marrying of flavours, which is caused by stronger or fuller bodied cigars being stored with milder or weaker flavoured cigars. Dividers, trays and drawers enable you to separate cigars in your humidor.
My humidor is not maintaining humidity, what do I do?
Please read our section on maintaining and caring for your humidor.
Why isnt my hygrometer accurate?
A hygrometer needs to be calibrated to provide an accurate reading. If your hygrometer is new or has been moved then it might require re-calibrating.
How can I calibrate my hygrometer?
Please read our section on calibrating your hygrometer.
Can I use tap water in my humidifier and humidor?
We strongly recommend that you only use distilled water or our very own humidification solution in your humidifier or humidor to avoid damage to your humidor and cigars. Tap water has a tendency to develop mould which could seriously damage your cigars.
What is humidification solution?
Humidification solution contains distilled water, propylene glycol and an anti-mould agent. Propylene glycol has properties which maintain humidity, releasing moisture into your humidor if the humidity is too low or absorbing moisture if the humidity is too high.
What wood are humidors made of?
Cigar humidors can be made of a variety of wood, metal and veneer materials for the outer casing. The interior of good quality cigar humidors is lined with Spanish cedar wood because of its properties in absorbing and maintaining moisture.
How do I set up my humidor?
To set up your humidor follow these steps:
1. Place a shot glass filled with distilled water or our very own humidification solution at the bottom of your humidor.
2. Prepare your humidifier and place inside the humidor.
3. Place your calibrated hygrometer inside the humidor.
4. Close the lid and store your humidor in a suitable environment.
5. Check the humidity daily using the hygrometer. When it reaches the 68%-72% range the humidor environment has been properly stabilised.
